Judys Rocket To Cash, a 2-year-old Solid Paint-Bred stallion, bested the field
of seven other Paint Horses to finish nearly two lengths in the lead, posting a
time of 16.18 seconds. Sired by Judys Lineage and out of Golden Rainbows AQHA,
the stallion earned $9,364 for his efforts to increase his lifetime earnings to
$10,864 in two races. If Judys Rocket To Cash’s first two races are any
indication of his strength as a runner, Paint racing may see a new star emerge.
The stallion is owned by Jerry Leavell of Mercedes, Texas, was trained by Robert
Touchet and ridden by Isaac Chapa.
Finishing the race in second place was the 2-year-old tobiano Paint filly JNL
Champagne Lineage. The filly, also owned by Leavell and competing in her second
race, finished a neck ahead of the third-place finisher, covering the track in
16.46 seconds. JNL Champagne Lineage, sired by Judys Lineage and out of Twaynas
Panda, earned $4,682 for a career earnings of $5,182. The filly was also trained
by Touchet and was ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo.
O J Okey rounded out the top three with a time of 16.50 seconds. The 2-year-old
Solid Paint-Bred filly, owned by Javier Lujan of Pharr, Texas, ran a strong race
despite being bumped. Sired by Real Easy Okey AQHA and out of Alright Evelyn,
the filly earned $2,341 in her second career race for a lifetime earnings of
$2,841. O J Okey was trained by Francisco Vega, Jr., and ridden by Hector
Vasquez.
Other Paint Horses completing the race, along with times, include Slick Angel
(16.52 seconds), He Will Smashm First (16.60 seconds), Grand Diamonds (16.63
seconds), Allysa (16.75 seconds) and Alamitos Magic Cash (16.77 seconds).
More about Paint Horse racing
Horse racing has long been one of America’s favorite spectator sports. With the
recent growth of the Paint Horse breed, it’s no wonder that Paints have become
one of the hottest tickets in the horse racing industry.
Since 1966, when APHA officially recognized the sport, Paint racing has made
major strides forward. In that inaugural year, 17 starters ran for $1,290 in
just two states—Texas and Oklahoma. In 2008, more than 570 starters competed in
more than 660 APHA-recognized races for record purses totaling more than $5
million.
A total of 17 states now feature Paint racing, including Arizona, California,
Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota,
Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Paint
Horses also race in Canada.
"Paint Racing continues to be an opportunity for breeders, owners and trainers
to take a serious look at," said APHA Executive Director Lex Smurthwaite. "The
amount of purse money available and the average earning per Paint starter is
creating new interest in the Paint racing industry."
